THE MELBOURNE CUP RACE. OPENING OP THE EXHIBITION. RIOTS AT CHARTERS TOWERS. THREE MEN SHOT. Hokitika, Nov. 15. Melbourne, Nov9. The Council bag appointed a committee to consider the resolutions of the Assembly on the amendments in the Mining on Private Property Bill. Chief Justice Staweil has received two years' leave of absence to visit England. On the Melbourne Cup Day there were over 40, 000 present. It was a magnificent spectacle. Twenty-two horses started. , Tait's Quack won ; Ace was second j. and Dagworth was third. Time : 3min 39sec. The race meeting was generally well attended. There has been a complete gala week— races, balls, opening of the Theatre Royal, and other amusements. The city has been crowded with strangers. The exhibition was opened on" Wednesday, the Governor performing the cere, mony. Judge Barry read an address, and a reply was given by the Governor.
There was a large display of local products and manufactures. Numerous exhibits mark well the industrial progress of the Colony. The exhibition is likely to be a great success. The German Princes have proceeded to India, _ Tho jumping match between Ingleside and Canary has not come off. Mr Webb has advised by telegraph that the. designation of the San Francisco line is changed to that of the California, New Zealand, and Australian Mail. ? There has been no business done this week, in consequence of the mail and the holidays. Oats firm, at 3s 3d to 3s 6d. Wheat, 7s 6d to 83. Nothing doing in the share market. Airived — Helena, from Dunedin. . . - SIDNEY, NOV. 9. " Parliament has been opened. Measures are announced, including an alteration in the constitution of the Council. In a speech there is a paragraph referring, to the mail service. It condemns .the precipitate action of Victoria in accepting the terms of the Imperial Government without consulting other .colonies. The Governor has telegraphed a protest to the Secretary of State. The address was agreed to by both Houses. Mr Driver has been elected Chairman of Committees. The Divorce Bill has passed a Committee of the Assembly. The Permissive Bill was read a first time. A man has been found murdered at Grenville. Immense returns have been obtained at the Tambaroora mines from very rich stone. • Hume, who left to search for Leichhardt, reports the discovery of splendid pastoral country, west of the Darwin telegraph line, and a lake 70 miles long of fish. There has been a riot at Charters Towers. The mob attacked a butcher's shop. Three men were shot. The "disturbance has now subsided. The Assembly has passed resolutions authorising the Government to join the other colonies in a mail service. Arrived — Newcastle, Alarm, P. C. The .South-Eastern Railway Bill has passed the Assembly, and it is left to the Government to enter into the most advantageous contract for the conveyance of mails. . The wheat crop is considered safe from rust. An average of nearly 20 bushels to the acre is expected. Wheat, 6s 6d. Queensland, Nov. 8. The Government announce half a million loan at four per cent. Tasmania, Nov. 8. The Ministry have been sworn in. Parliament is prorogued to the 12th prox.
