| j Abroad famine prevailed in Dublin on 'August 19, the bakers having struck. t The eastern end of the end of the great iCathedral of Canterbury was badly burned V>n the morning of the 3rd of September. JThe fire caught over the shrine of Bishop Becket, by the upsetting of a brazier used by the workmen repairing the roofing. There was great excitement, and the whole garrison turned out to assist the workmen. There was great delay in checking the flames owing to scarcity of water. There was considerable damage done to the structure and contents. The fire in the Cathedral was extinguished after destroying 150 ft of roof. There was much damage from water and heat. The shrine of Thomas a' Becket is uninjured. The mosiac pavement of the Cathedral is covered with melted lead, which dropped i from the burning roofs, and the altar was ' deluged with water. The Cathedral is insured. It has been customary during the past three hundred years to hold religious services in the Cathedral daily, and this custom has not been broken by the fire, as services were held after the suppression of the flames.
