There was considerable damage done to the structure and contents. The fire in the Cathedral was extinguished after destroying 150 ft of roof. There was much damage from water and heat. The shrine of Thomas a' Becket is uninjured. The mosiac pavement of the Cathedral is covered with melted lead, which dropped i from the burning roofs, and the altar was ' deluged with water. The Cathedral is insured. It has been customary during the past three hundred years to hold religious services in the Cathedral daily, and this custom has not been broken by the fire, as services were held after the suppression of the flames.
