THE Grey River Argus PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1872.

Allusion was made yesterday in these columns to an effort which is being made by the inhabitants of Hokitika to organise an exhibition of local products, arts, and manufactures, and it was suggested that, while Hokitika deserved credit for initiating the project, it would contribute to the mutual advantage of the two communities were Greymouth to assist as far as possible in its promotion. To-day we have to quote the example of another West Coast community — that of Westport — as an example which equally points to Greymouth the moral to "go and dp likewise." Students of our advertisement columns will be aware that, at Christchurch, in a month hence, there is to be held an exhibition of a very varied assortment of products arid manufactures illustrating the resources and industries of the Colony. To that exhibition all parts of the Colony are expected and invited to contribute, and there can be little doubt that, with anything like lively interest taken in the matter, a very valuable selection of exhibits might be made, both for the purpose of display in the City of the Plains, and for subBequent re-selection and transmission to the great Continental Exhibition of 1873, such being, part of . the design of the promoters. The production of agricultural, pastoral, or manufactured exhibits has not attained such a degree of importance or perfection on the West Coast as *to warrant hopes of many such being sent to any colonial collection like that proposed to be now held, but surely the Coast, with its coal, clays, quartz, and alluvial deposits, can compete with any other district in exhibiting the natural resources of an altogether wonderful country. Actuated by this consideration, the inhabitants of Westport have already taken sieps to have the resources of their particular district represented by holding a public meeting, by appointing a committee, and by liberally opening a subscription list to defray expenses,- and, laudable as their example has been, their energies have not been exercisedaday too soon. The exhibition in question is to be opened on December 16, bnt it is intimated that articles intended for exhibition should be in the hands of the committee of management not later than the first of the month. Even the Buller people, therefore, in procuring the samples of coal and mineral ores which they alone contemplate sending, will have to act with expedition, as they have already done with some enthusiasm, but if the name of the Grey Valley is at all to occupy a position in the Exhibition catalogue equal to the extent of its resources, some strenuous effort will require now to be made in secuiing exhibits and in forwarding the same to their no very distant destination. By the two Governments by which the district is blessed (or otherwise) something might be done, but, if any gentlemen should take a special interest in the subject, both on account of the direct good they could do to the district, and the indirect benefits they would confer upon themselves, these gentlemen are mining share-holdera, raining managers, and miners, not excluding oven tbe humble " hatter." Now is the season for the production of "specimens," and for their introduction to the public, with full particulars as to the claims from which they emanate, and all else that may contribute to informing the Colony as to the resources of a district about which comparatively little is yet known except by hearsay.
