We learn from a private letter received by lait mail that Sir James M'Culloch is endeavoring to induce the Imperial Government to make Melbourne the head-quarters of the Australian squadron, or at any rate to get a ship of war to call here of tener and to remain longer than at present. — Age. • The steamship Great Britain, for Liverpool left Hobson's Bay at 10.30 on the 23rd ultimo, and, going down by tho way of the' South Channel, cleared the Heads at 3.30 p.m., taking only one hundred and sixty nassengera, rather a small number for this favorite vessel ; but this time of the year is the most unseasonable time for passengers leaving here, as winter is carried all round.
