Melijourne — By the Gleaner we have M elbourne papers to the 23rd ult. The A rgus of that date reports :—

In the import markets business has been somewhat slow throughout the day; and with the exception of what has reached us through tho aution-rooms little of special importance has been made public in the way of sales. Expectation has been on the gui vive all day for the appearance of a telegram from England, but with the exception of a private business telegram to Messrs James M'Ewan and Co., up to the close of business hoars nothing else was referred to in the city. We understand, however, that a private telegram from Batavia, dated 20th inst., was received by a firm in the city, which states that sugar was easier, and that three vessels were chartered to load refining sugars. In breadstuffs, we note considerable firmness in flour. A few parcels to the extent of 120 tons have been taken up at Ll6 to Ll6 10s, equal to the rise established yesterday. There is a very good demand for bakers' parcels at Ll7. Oats are very steady ; and, in addition to the usual town demand, we. learn, of an- inquiry having -»ofc -in frbih some of ihe country districts, and sales of feeding sorts are mentioned at 3s 4£d. Maize is dull at 3s 2d for parcels ; a line of 1000 bags is stated to have changed hands at that price ; small parcels are quitted at up to 3s 3^d. The sales of fancy teas this forenoon went oil satisfactorily ; 1650 quarter-chests gunpowder and orange pekoe were quitted at Is 7d to Is Hid per 1b in bond.
