MINING NEWS.

NEW RIVER DISTRICT.

[PJROM OUB OWN COKKESPOKDENT.] October 29. There is nothing further known about the terrace at Irishman's, nor is any likelihood for the next few weeks, when there is no doubt that the parties taking in the tunnel will be able to decide the question, whether the gold that has been found is a mere patch or forms a portion of the run from Cariboo, Soldier's, Cockeye, aud No Name. Some of the old identities who claim the knowledge of knowing all the ground express themselves convinced that it is a mere patch on the shelf of the terrace, but against this theory it must be borne in mind that the gdld is running into the terrace, for whilst fche prospectors got it near the edge, yet the next party will have to drive some 150 ft before they are likely to meet it. This certainly supports the supposition that it will ultimately prove to be the lost run, and, if so, it will prove very acceptable just now. Freaks of nature, however, have been so very abundant in this district, that to hazard a decided opinion about any run of gold before it is thoroughly proven is almost absurd, for experience has sfyown that the best prospects are sometimes found in claims that have barely paid for working, and that runs of gold suddenly terminate without being traced further.. Whether this will prove to be the case at Irishman's remains to be seen.

It is expected that there will shortly be a grand land sale at Marsden, as the Government have been lately engaged in surveying the township, J t is to be hoped that in laying it off dne precaution will taken to reserve land for schools, churches, &c, a commonage for cattle, and, last a recreation ground. It must be remembered that Marsden is in its earliest stages of infancy, and what may be useless for the piesent generation may be of the utmost importance to those who are to come. Marsden is destined to one of the most rising and flourishing townships on the Coast, but at the present is kept back by

the culpable neglect of the Government in not making the road through to Greymouth, and allowing the Clifton road to remain in such a state. Week after week complaints are made about this road, and nothing done to repair it by the County

Government. So bad has it become that

J private parties have been actually comI pelled to get it patched up in some

places for the safety of their horses. Is this to continue, or is it not ? Was it ever known in the whole world that the Government charged tolls for a road, and private parties had to make it passable ? Again it is asked who is to blame for this disgraceful and shameful neglect, and how long is it to continue 1 Who is the County Chairman ? Where does he live 1 and who does he represent? that he should permit such a want of justice to exist in the County, as to charge tolls for an impassable road that has to be repaired by private individuals. Shame on the County Government and all connected with it!
