THE CLIFTON AND MARSDEN TRACK.

[to thb editor.]

Sib— l quite agree with your New River correspondent, in his letter of last week's issue of the Wbekxy Argus, that the track between Marsden aad Clifton, is in a most disgraceful state ; in fact, it is, unfit for traffic, and. then let it. be borne in mind tolls are charged and must, be paid; This is sufficient to give rise to the strongest protests against it. As to the many queries as . to .who is to blame for this state of things, perhaps a little light may be: 'cast: on the matter.; It is rthe business of the County Engineer to look after so urgent v matter more promptly, and the time and services of the County Chairman,' as a servant of the County Government are more urgently required^ would ] be -more fittingly ; employed ; in seeing after the practical affairs of the. County than the very questidnable:utility of his presence at Wellington. Upon these gentlemen must hinge the dissatisfaction coin plained of. • There ia an apathy displayed in carrying out many'bf the public werks of the County when the business of the session is past'that cannot but excite merited censure,. I must remark also, that" the Tender Committee have been at fault in accepting" a tender for the repairing of the road which could, not. accomplish the .work referred to.' The Tender Committee would shbw a wise control in looking a little sharper after the like. It is but just to do so, as public works, taking the present case as a criterion, are, shamefully overlooked and neglected. : , But it is certainly unbearable when business men in the district have toy pay tqlls< on this road, , and pay away sums of money at the same time to keejJ parts of it in repair, that it may be made fit to travel on. : : Other important works provided for, this district in. the last session of the Council have not as yet received any attention ; . but of , those a little maybe by : aria-by. ... 1 : ■'; .V:;. jam,^., ; . .
