The freshet in the river and the heavy sea running on the bar having gone down during Thursday night, the p.s. Wallace crossed the bar early yesterday morning, after having been detained in the roadstead since Wednesday. She leaves again this morning for Hokitika. The B.s. Claud Hamilton, which has been detained in the roadstead for the last two days, was tendered yesterday morning by the pj. Dispatch, which pat on board of her about 30 passengers and shipments of gold by the Banks of Australasia and New South Wales, The p. 8. Charles Edward sailed yesterday morning for Westport and Nelson. We (the Dunedin Evening Star) are informed of a fatal accident that occurred on board the ship Peter Denny, on the last homeward passage from this port. At about nine o'clock on the evening of the Ist April. John Shaw, of Glasgow, a youth about 17 years of age, whilst engaged shifting o7er the mizen royal halliards to windward, fell from aloft on to the deck, and though picked up immediately, was found to be quite dead. Shaw came out in the ship Helenslee, and was payed off when the ship was sold ; he then remained about Port Chalmers for some time, and ultimately joined the Peter Denny to revisit his home.
