BOROUGH COUNCIL.
. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night at the Town Hall. Present— the May>r, Councillors Masters, Glenn, M'Gregor, Ooates, Dupre, Woolco'ck and Smith. The minutes of the last meeting weik read and confirmed. : .' The Clerk to the Bench, transmitted LI, the amount of fines collected under the Corporations Act during the last fortnight. * \ The following letter was read from tho Public Works Office, Wellington:— j " I am directed by the Hon. Mr Item to acknowledge the receipt of your le^fe^ of the 17th September, in which yog^Kr quest that the Government EngSKj£Vlg may be allowed to advise the BoiC^iF Council in reference to the best plan to be adopted for completing the quays along the works now being reconstructed under Mr O'Connor's direction, and to inform you in reply that the Government will have pleasure in instructing Mr O'Connor to assist you in the way proposed." Harbormaster Allardyce wrote requesting that life-lines, hooks for buoys, and halyards should be supplied.— lt : was ordered that the articles applied for should be granted. ,[-.■ -■ ■■■■■. The Secretary of the Paroa Road Board wrote as follows : — " I have the honor, by direction of the Chairman of the Paroa Road Board, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 10th October, and, in reply, to inform you that one. hundred and twenty-three 1 : chains of the Greymouth and Piroa road will be completed on or before Ist January next; so that only a portion, of seventy chains more or less, will remain to be made to bring the road up to the boundary of the Borough of Greymouth. The Board anticipate the receipt of sufficient funds to complete that section bri Ist ' , April next, either by means of rates or of 7 Government subsidies., I am also directed to inform you that a letter has been forwarded to the General Government, from this office, explaining the necessity for, and the advantages connected with, the Marsden and Paroa line of road, and urging the early construction of that road, as being the connection between the existing main roads in' the ' Greenstone district and the seaport/ of Greymouth. In conclusion, I have the honor to request that you will be good enough to furnish this Board with information as to the' date on which the Borough portion of the Greymouth and Paroa road is likely to be commenced, in order jthafc the Board may make arrangements to carry put its work at such a date as to ensure the opening of it with the least possible delay."--Letter received. A petition was read from a large number of residents on Mawhera Qaay, requesting that liipre. landing places should ". be made in the sto<ie breastwork now being built, as at present boatmen had frequently to lose much time in waiting their turn for loading at the steps.— Petition received and to lie on the table until next meeting. ' . The Finance Committee sent in the following report :— ;». ; " Your Committee met on the 18th day of October, and find that the Council's liabilities at this date amount toL2000; and have the honor to report— lst,. That your Committee, instructed the Chairman to make arrangements with the Bank of New South Wales to obtain an increased overdraft from the sum of LSOO to L7OO, '■ to enable pressing payments to be made during next month, namely, Bills payable, labor account, and interest upon : Government loan. 2nd, Your Committee recommend that the Town Clerk be instructed to make arrangements with the holder of the Council's bill, now overdue, for the sum of L 124 7s 9d. 3rd, ' Your Committee beg to inform the Council that the payment of the sum of Ll6O, exclusive of salaries, will have to be provided for during the next six months, and that, the probable assets of the Council for the same period* including Borough rates, 1873, and wharfage and tonnage dues,' will amount to about the sum of, say, L 1900."
The Town Surveyor laid on the table the plans and specifications for the formation of Tainui street from town to the southern town boundary ; but, on the motion of Mr Smith, consideration of the question was adjourned for a fortnight, and the plans were, in the meantime, passed over to the Public Works Committee. ' -
The other business was of no public interest.
