GENERAL SUMMARY. An explosion of a powder mill at Hduston occurred, and four lives were lost. The builders strike in London continues. The strike mania prevails throughout the Kingdom. A fire in the eastern roof of the great Cathedral at Canterbury destroyed- 150 ft of the roof and Mosaic pavement. The cathedral, being covered with molten lead, > considerable damage was done by water. Fortunately the remainder of the building was saved. News from Cape Town reports the continued success of the diamond fields. The Queen presented Mr Stanley with a gold snuffbox and a letter of thanks^ The inhabitants of Sedan are draping their houses in morning in commemoration of the capture of Sedan. It is stated that evidence is adduced that Bazine's trial proves traitorous correspondence with the Germans prior to the fall of Metz. ■ The payment of 500,0C0,000 francs of the French war indemnity to Germany has been effected, owing to determined preparation for defence by the King. Abyssinia. No Egyptian force has entered that country. Mexican news states that Diaz has refused to accept the amnesty, and fled to the mountains. Confidence in the Government is improving. Small-pox is causing fearful ravages in Chili. The Cuban insurgents are massing all their forces to attack Cinces-villate. Havanna is overrun with scoundrels of every description, and murders and robberies are constantly committed.
