RICH STONE STRUCK AT THE LYELL.
Information reached Reefton on Wednesday that a splendid vein of gold had been struck in the main reef at the Alpine Company's .claim, Lyell, and this has been corroborated by a correspondent of the Inangohua Herald, who viewed the specimens obtained, and states that they completely throw the rich leader being worked in the Little Wonder claim into the shade. The specimens contain more gold than quartz. How far the vein will continue cannot be predicted, but its discovery has had a most encouraging effect upon the holders of claims in the district. Carroll, one of the shareholder's in the Little Wonder claim admits flnt the Alpine stone far exceeds anything obtained in their ground. The Alpine Company have commenced to crush and will continue to operate on their own stone for a month, after which they have arranged to crush 600 or 300 tons for the Excelsior Company. J Meanwhile, the favorable return from the Little Wonder claim is causing inquiry to be made respecting this locality in more distant quarters. Every person met with asks for news, whilst others less patient are already bound for the reefs. There is little alteration in the township, which like other digging centres can boast of an undue proportion of public houses compared with its population; One or two large and handsome buildings are in course of erection, but matters gene-., rally in the township wear a quiet aspect. On arriving at the reefs, however, the. scene changes, and here all is busy activity with most proaiising prospects. The stone at the Little Wonder contiues fully up- to the average, arid in the adjoining claims they believe to have traced the same rich leader, so that everybody is working with a will and sanguine as to the results. A good many claims have been pegged off on the opposite side of Irishman Creek, and in some of them goldeu stone has been found on the surface. The Excelsior Company are pushing on with the Alpine Company's shoot.
