There were no arrivals or departures at this port yesterday. The s.B. Kennedy is expected to arrive today from Nelson, via Westport and Hokitika, and tho Tararua is expected to put in an appearance to-day from Melbourne direct. She takes passengers for Nelson, other coast ports, and Melbourne via the Bluff. The in. Claud Hamilton is announced to leave this port on Monday, the 14th inst., "jrith passengers for Melbourno direct. ' Dia you ever (asks the correspondent of a contemporary) remark how comparatively •mall is the number of New Zealand settlers who. leave their homes on a tour to the adjacent provinces ? Of course I except the happy few who are privileged to travel at public expense in tho Colonial Government steamer Luna. What is the cause of the stay-at-home feeling which is so remarkable? Simply, or at least in a great measure, the expense of travelling. A mau cannot co anywhere without making a hole inaLSO note— an amount which, after the pleasure is over, be finds it not quite so easy to replace. Steamboat proprietors cannot be mode to see that cheap fares would greatly promote travelling. They stick to the old charges of happier days, and the consequence frequently is that steamers run from one port to another with half-a-dozen passengers, or thereabout Moderate fares would speedily open people's eyes to the absolute necessity of a change of air and scene at least once a year, and the companies would gain in the long run.
