Plummer, who recently escaped fromgaol and was recaptured, has been sentenced to two years' hard labor for being illegally at large, and two and a half years, cumulative, for five other offences. Wellington, Oct. 9. The Press Conference met to-day, and adjourned to Friday. The Superintendent (Mr Fitzherbert) opened the Provincial Council. He said, when Mr Fox was defeated, he was asked by all the other Wellington members to join any new Government that might be formed. He objected, but was over-" ruled. He said that Mr Stafford's Government was based on the understanding that there should be unity of the Colony, with Wellington as the seat of Government. Tho aftairs of the Province were satisfactory. The conduct of the Wellington members, during the session, had been patriotic. Mr Bunny gave notice of. a motion to the effect that a dissolution is desirable. Auckland, Oct. 9. The Chatham Island affair proves not to be so serious as was at first reported. It was a rriere quarrel about land. A meeting at Waikato condemned the withdrawal of grants to Road Boards and: the return of confiscated land. The Harbor Board. have protested against Mr Reid's action in insisting that all works undertaken by the Board should be submitted to the General Government. The Grand Jury threw out the bill in the libel case of M'Cormick v. J. S. M'Farlane for a letter published in all the Auckland papers.
