ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. NORTHUMBERLAND.

This screw steam clipper, which arrived in Hobson's Bay in February last on her maiden voyage, entered her second appearance in these waters on the 16th September, and although her first passage was a decided success, her present run out has altogether surpassed it, and it may fairly be claimed for her that she has distinguished herself on this occasion by making one of the fastest pas•ages on record from England direct. Not the least singular circumstance in connection with her present voyage is the fact that by the hut mail Captain Shinner, her comsunder, wrote out to his agents statins that 1m would be in Hobsim's Bay on 16th September, bat when there was no word of her from Cape Otway or the Heads yesterday aoramfr it was deemed that he had been over sanguine, and had slightly niiscalcnlated the powers of his vessel. Her arrival at the Heads, however, early yesterday afternoon, and her subsequent appearance j n the bay fast night, quite confirmed Captain fihinnet's prognostication and proved his con-

fidence in the good ship to be well-founded. A number of the passengers on board, taking thocae from Captain Shinner, wrote to their friends out here to the same effect, and as a consequence, their relatives were in waiting for them on the pier last night, when Pilot Caught brought the steamer alongside. The "Northumberland, in addition to making a rapid passage, has brought 12 days' later English papers.— Argus, September 17.
