The p s Charles Edward, from Nelson, Westport, and Hokitika, arrived yesterday forenoon, and will sail on her return trip to* The schooners Lady Don, and Spray, both from Lyttelton, were towed into the Hokitika River by the p s Lioness on Friday morning's tide. An alteration is rapidly taking place at the Buller River bar; the southern channel still continues to shoal up, and at high tide the water flows across the island, "forming a channel from south to north, which is evidently deepening and extending. The northern channel still continues deep. The s s Bangitoto, on her last passage from Bluff to Melbourne, encountered some very heavy weather off the Solander.- A strong north-west gale, which fortunately did not hut long, stript her of what sail she had set, flooding her cabins, and doing consider* able damage above her decks. Another incident, showing the capacities of Port Chalmers as a harbor for large ships, United Stat-s maQ steamefNebraski. 2144 tons, gutting under way on quarter ebb and proceeding to sea. She was drawing 17ft forward and about 18ft aft. Crossed the inner and outer bar with plenty, water to spare. On getting outside, Pilot Stevens was congratulated by Captain Harding and the passengers, amongst whom was his Honor the Superintendent, for his skill in getting ' her outside on the ebb.
