THE LITTLE WONDER CLAIM, LYELL.

fwESTPORT TIMES, OCT. 4.J Messrs Cairns and Carroll arrived from the Lyell on Wednesday morning, bringing with them the gold obtained from the first crushing from their claim. The gold was lodged at the Bank^of -Ze*laji4^ for retorting, and yesterday the following results were made known :-rr ß6 tons of* stone, less 4 cwt, yielded from retorted gold and loose-gold Haken from the rip- -^-* pies, at the rate of.lOoz 9dwt to the -ton. But in addition, to this must be taken into account some jmall parcels of picked gold aiill held by the proprietors of tlio claim, and it may j also bej rioted that during the getting out^ofSlhe stone for crushing, the greater proportion of tlio. working expenses were met by the- sale^ f of small quantities of gold obtained by; hand-crushing and sold as occasion Served. /:; The owners of the claim have held possession for nearly twelve months past. A third niatej who originally formed one of •' the party, sold out his interest Uome' ' months since for LiO ; and the prospects ' have subsequently at times appeared so ■ cheerless that one other share, at least, might have been purchased at a much r less sum. However, the two partners, through good, and evil fortune, have stuck manfully to their ground* working hard* themselves and paying for labor, achiev- -.; ing at last the satisfactory result now > recorded. They hold, under miners' rights, five men's ground, extending 300 ft -....'. along the lead ; and they purpose, after ■ another crushing by the Alpine machinery, ; « to erect a small five-head. battery,; and thus save the cost of crushing, noW ■"•■"; amounting to L 2 per ton. -In all probability the stone in the main reef, when struck, may not prove nearly so rich as ■ in the leaders now being worked, bat if >, it realises no more than the recent averages of Inangahua reefs, about 2oz to „ . ths ton, it will prove remunerative to a degree sufficient to induce a still more careful prospecting of the Lyell district. > -
