The Collingwood correspondent' of thY Nelson Examiner gives the following particulars as to the mysterious disappearance of the Rev. MrGaskin:— • . Another fatal accident from drowning is i unfortunately to x be recorded. The Rev. R. H. Gaskin, Who was the Episco- ' palian minister resident here, was last night (Sept. 24) returning. :horae from Pakawau, and, as the circumstances seem ■to indicate, was drowned intheßuatanewa, a creek at the further side of the Aorere: estuary. The nor3e which -he had ridden, an animal belonging to Mr Brace, having come home riderless, suspicions were at once aroused, and messengers were immediately despatched along the coast to the last places at which the unfortunate gentleman had called, but: the result only justified the worst fears. Mr Gaskin had. left .Mr . Sedger's at a quarter past 6 o'clock p.m., and was seen passing the residence of a settler named Nehoff, about three miles from Cbllingwood, at dusk. A. ride of twenty minutes or less thence would have brought Mm to the stream, which is a highly dangerous one to those not thoroughly acquainted with it — with deep holes and shifting sands. It was in the same place that one of the early settlers here, Mr John Clark, was drowned ten years ago.; Search parties have been out during the day, and now again, the tide. being low, they are searching by torch-light, dragging the stream, but as yet withpUt • 3uccess. This event has naturally cast a gloom over the little community, for the deceased gentleman, who had only been here. about ten months, and had labored very hard in the discharge of his duties, was held, in de-, served esteem." September 26. — The search has been going on all the morning — three boats, several horsemen, and footmen having been engaged, but so far to no purpose. The death of a very old resident of Port Chalmers, Mrs Thomas.Tayler; is announced in the Otago papers. Her husband, Mr Tayler, had several times "been member of the Provincial Council and mayor of the township. , '..'.'
