MEETING AT GERMAN GULLY.

A public meeting was held on the 12th instant, at Loughery's Hotel, German Gully, New River, at which the miners and business people of the district attended, in, J^rge, numbers, to protest against the Gold-mining Bill. lately introduced into the General Assembly;. Mr Duncan, was present, and spoke at length in condemnation of the heavy taxation of the proposed Bill oni the mining community. Mr Dungan -also read the report of the Select Committee of the County Council, the report showing the enormous and oppressive taxation which the Gold-mining -Bill ■ contained, and that it was unfit in every sense for the mining community of New ZealarTd. Mr Dungan also spoke of his position as their representative in the County Council; of his endeavors to get the Wants of the district attended to. : -He also spoke of other County affairs, and thanked the meeting for its attendance and for the confidence they reposed in him. The Chairman then called upon Mr Burke to propose the first resolution. Mr Burke then proposed— "That. this meeting is unanimously of opinion that the. increased taxation imposed in the new Gold-mining Bill of the late Fox Ministry is both unju3t and oppressive. This meeting is also of opinion that, if the Bill became law, it would prove most detrimental to the mining interest in the Colony of New Zealand." Mr John Hogan seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. ' -Mr-War. Card proposed the second resolution, "That this meeting is of opinion the conduct of the members for the West Coast Gold Fields cannot escape censure for not determinedly opposing the Gold-mining Bill of the late Fox Ministry in its two readings before 'the House highly subversive and damaging as it

would prove to be to the mining industry of New Zealand if it became law." Mr M. Ryan seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. A committee was formed to watch over the. interests of the district. Mr Burke proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Dungan for his attendance, and for th© trouble he had taken in getting the particulars of the New Mining Bill, and explaining them to this meeting, which was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting.
