The Spanish Government have decided to abolish slavery in the Spanish dominions. The Provincial Correspondence considers that the approaching meeting of the Emperors of Germany, Russia, and Austria will prove to be a guarantee of peace. La. Ewi'ope adds that it is the purpose of Germany to maintain a good feeling between Russia and Austria, for whose friendship she prepared the way. The Pope has written a strong letter denouncing the intention of the British
Government, to prosecute priests for participation in the Galway election. Cholera is raging in Russia. Eight out of nine die of the disease. It is reported that gold has been found at Kihsale, Ireland. The Cubaninsurgents defeated a column of Spanish troops during the last fortnight. Of the Spanish 200 were killed ; 36 rebel prisoners were taken. A Suez despatch reports that 2000 Egyptians were advancing on Abyssinia with a view to conquer. The Emperor Kassai was marching to meet them, but it is thought that his defeat is certain, and that Magdala will eventually fall into the hands of the invaders. . The great armed election disturbances between French and British residents at Quebec have been quelled. Several were killed. 7 I Details of Mexican outrages given before the commission were shocking. Men were killed for dollar of tribute. The strike of agricultural laborers con? tinues in Oxfordshire. The Government have placed a number of soldiers at the disposal of farmers, and crops, the saying of which was endangered, are harvested. The German Government intends to hold possession of Belfort, although willing allow compensation to France. The differences between Brazil and the Argentine Republic are not yet settled. Both countries are preparing for thereon-, tingencies of war. : The San Salvador troops under Mendina captured Omoa, Honduras, seized women and children, and threatened to shoot them unless the fort surrendered, which it did. Mendina then proclaimed himself President.. His troops commenced pillage. Jose Maria Mendina, the real President of Honduras, is likely to attack Omoa. The British and Spanish consuls ask for war vessels to protect the British and Spanish residents.
