The prisoner addressed the jury for two hours. The Judge's charge is not yet concluded. Wellington, Sept. ]4. The following Bills have been read a second time : — Telegraph Notices Bill ; Stamp Duties Bill, reducing receipt and cheque duties, and providing for a large number of remissions in cases of manu- . facturing companies, friendly societies, &c. ; Post Office Amendment Bill, reducing the newspaper postage ; Gold Duties Bill, reducing the duty to 2s ; and the Public Revenues Bill. Auckland, Sept. 14. Fleming, a sharebroker, at present a theological student, and late Secretary to the Young Men's Christian Association, is remanded on a charge of embezzlement. Ladley, a member of the Armed Constabulary, was drowned this afternoon when out in a boat alongside Tauranga wharf. September 15.. Arrived — Hero, s.s., with twenty passengers. She left Sydney on the 9th. The Randwick Spring Meeting commenced on the 7th. Loup Garou was "the winner of the Australian Derby. Pritchard, engineer, fell down the stairs of the Royal Hotel, and was killed. . - The rush to Charters Towers is checked. Late telegrams state that the lead had run out. A thousand tons of sugar have arrived at Sydney during the 7th and Bth. A Press Conference is sitting. In Melbourne, maize is dull at 3s 2^d ; store, 10s ; wheat, 5s 9d. Napier, Sept. 15; Arrived.— Barque Ballarat, 89 days from London, witli 360 immigrants, all well. The ship Hodving, with 340 Scandinavians, from Christiana, has just anchored.
