Melbourne. — The Argius of tho 7th inst. reports :— Business in th« import markets to-day has been fairly active, and sales to a considerable amount have been effected. In breadstuff's there has been very little doing, owing to the unsettled state of the market ; and quotations for both flour and wheat are, for the present, nominal. For oats there has been a steady demand, and 400 bags have been placed at 3s 3d to 3? 5d ncr bushel for ordinary to prime feed outs. Maize remains unchanged at 3s 2£d to 3s 3d per bushel for parcels. In teas, a Urge business has been done. Of the teas per E. M. Young, 2000 half-chests have been placed at from Is 4d to 23 4d per lb, in bond, the bulk being from Is lid to 2s 3d. Of this cargo, which originally consisted of F1,3'»0 packages, 2000 of which were transhipped, 6000 have now been sold, leaving only 3300 packages in importers' hands, the fine qualities of these teas attracting the favorable notice of J the trade. The cargo of the Rachel, the second arrival with new season teas, was offered at auction this afternoon, and also attracted a very large attendance, and che auctioneers succeeded in placing from the box and afterwards 4000 packages, at prices ranging from Is 4d to Is lOd per lb in bond ; and we learn that further transactions are pending. In sugars, outside the auction mart there has been little doing. The cargo of tho Victorine, consisting of 5579 bags, was submitted to public competition, and the whole, with the exception of two lines, was cleaved off at 3Gs 3d to 37s for good counters, 37b 6d for soft greys, 26s 6d to 37« 9d for yellow grainy sorts, 37s 9d for fine yellow brewing crystals, 38s 6d to 40s for grey crystals, 41s 6d to 42 3d for good to fine whites, and 40s for fine white counters. Hops have been more in demand, and some 40 bales and pockets have been placed at 2s 6d for fine Kents, and Is Cd to Is 9d for medium quality Tasmanian. Sales of currants to the extent of 150 barrels are mentioned at 5d per lb, duty paid. In liquids we notice a better demand. Dagger stout has been placed at 103 3d, and Hennessy's pale brandy, 1870, has realised 6s Sd per gallon, and a large parcel of brandy, best brands, has changed hands, the exact price not being disclosed. In metals, a shipment of 60 tons bar iron has been taken up at au extreme figure.
