She left Melbourne on the 7 th, at 4 p.m., making a four days and 22 hours' pasSiXge. She brings 11 saloon and 31 steerage passengers, 410 tons cargo, and six horses (entires). Her cargo includes 300 packages of the new season's teas for Wellington and Lytteltou, ex E. M. Young. The Omeo sailed for Townsville and Port Darwin at the same time as the Tararua, taking 216 steerage and 40 saloon passengers. Other steamers were sailing, full of passengers. Melbourne, Sept. 7. The Government proposition for a loan of a million and a half, at four per cent, interest on consolidated stocV, has been affirmed by the Assembly. . The motion to place a tax on imported stock from other Colonies was rejected by the Assembly. . Large numbers are leaving for the new diggings at Charters Towers, near Townsville, Northern Queensland. A strike has occurred am*ngst seamen for an advance of wages. Messrs James Henty and Black were re-elected to the Council. : The seats for the Eastern and Northwestern Provinces. are being contested. Fires have occurred in Elizabeth street, Melbourne, and in Gaelong. In the latter case eight wooden houses were destroyed. The Marriage with Deceased Wife's Sister Bill is said to be supported by the Government. A collision between two trains took plaoe at Essendon. The railway gciard only was slightly injured. Judgment has been given in the Admiralty Court case, relating to the steamer Albion, in favor of Bunn, the late master. Victoria is to be represented at the Vienna Exhibition. Another assault has been committed by a prisoner at Pentridge. Sailed— August 31, Mary, for Holritika. Sypjby, Sept. 6: : Dr Lang retires from the Ministry, after fifty years of clerical duties. . Rich copper mines are reported to have been discovered in the Bogan district. Cuthbert has obtained |a contract for, 4 schooners for the Admiralty for the suppresssion of the slave trade. The steamer Saxonia has again been floated. An Opposition banquet has recently been held at Bathurst. Last month's gold yield shows over ten thousand ounces of an increase. The rush to Charters Towors is causing great excitement. The digging is alluvial ; the sinking 4ft. Later accounts say that the reports from the diggings are much exaggerated. Adelaide, Sept. 6. An auriferous reef has been discovered at Yam Creek, near Port Darwin. Gold j is seen on the surface, aud the reef is well defined. Twenty-two claims have already been marked out, and others applied for, '.-■•■ Mr James Ferguson has been appointed Comptroller of Customs, vice Mr Hawker.
