Some idea may be formed of its magnitude from the fact that it is to bo upwards of 1000 ft in length by 37ft wide in the clear. All the piles of this jetty are jarrah. After being driven deep into the ground, the depth of water at the shallowest part of the jetty will be 19ft Gin at low water, and 25ft Gin at high water, while in the deepest part the depth will be 22ft at low and 28ft at high water. Of necessity these jarrah piles are of large diameter— aoout an average of 2ft through. They are driven in rows of eight each, and upon them aro placed longitudinal beams of line Oregon timber. The beams are over 97ft long ami more than 2ft square throughout. They are out dawn to 12 x 16, aud upon them will be laid a strong 4in black pine planking. Three lines of rails will lie upon this jetty, alongside which four of the largest veaaela that enter Port Chalmers Harbor may be discharging at the same time ; to offeot which the necessary steam cranes and apparatus are provided."
