MINING NE WS.

EXPLORING THE WEST COAST SOUNDS.

We recently reported at length the trip of the Awarua to the West Coast, with a party of prospectors on board who went in search of minerals, and the very gratifying success they had met With in their search at Bligh Sound. Since then we (Southland Times) have, been informed that Mr Daniel, who guided. the party, i 3 desirous to pu3h his investigation of that almost unknown region further. If he has not already done so, he intends to apply for six months protection for prospecting in Milford Sound, and for an extension of the time by three months, which he has already secured, for pro3efi'rom evidence already in his t^"^!' 1 Mr Daniel is satisfied that copper exTs*tsT in one or oiher or both of these localities in such quantity as would pay well for working. The Bligh Sound, venture is mainly in the hands of a Dunedin company, an 4 Mr. Daniel seesjnp reason why the inhabitants^ of the. Soiithlsmddistrict should not share in the mineral wealth to which they are so much nearer geographically. He is prepared/we believe, to return to the West Cpast and makea thorough exploration of the localities named, aud can find four men to go with, him to act as boat's crew and assistants in shore operations. Himself and each of these men would accept a considerable share of the risk, but as the benefits following success would be general, it can scarcely be expected.that they. should assume the sole responsibility of failure. The Times suggests that the best thing .to do would be to~ form a company for the purpose of fitting out and supporting a well-equipped party, making such , conditions that the men composing it would be interested not only in its ultimate success, but in its economical management and vigorous prosecution.
