Gwsv River Argus Office, ■ Thursday evening. The amount of revenue received at the Castoms on goods passed for home consumption to-day was £442 12 a 84,. ; - 1 ;i Gold dnty, L 142 Us 10J, paid by the Union Bank of Australia on II4O02! lMwt flgrgold, to be shipped by .the Albambr*, for Melbourne.

MKLboPHNE-'rho Argus of the 22nd inst. reports :— In the import markets trade ii moderately active; though' there is" no great show of business, Breadstuff's' are moved off steadily at unaltered rates ; at the public ssles, however, not much was done, flour is disposed of at XIG 10s to Ll6 15> in bakers' parcels, and up to Ll6 10s was bid at auction for town flour, but refused. 7s 2d was offered at unction for Port MacDonnell wheat, and 6s 10d for Tasmanian, but not accepted. At Messrs Beaver and Co's opening sale of prodace, some 2000 bushels of wheat we^e placed at 7* 4d, and good to prime oats were quitted at 3s 4d to 3s 6d. A line of 1500 bags feeding oats was aluo taken up privately at 3s 3d. Maize is improving in value, as mach as 3s 24d having been got by auction in one line for the Nautilus's cargo 1 of 600 bags. A large business has. been done in sugar. We understand that the balance-of the Marie's cargo of Mauritius, about 5000 bags, has been cleaned off by ; one bnyer, and several parcels have since been resold. Yellow brewing crystals have been placed at L 37 10s to L3B 10s and L 43 10s has been obtained f^r first whites. A cood deal of excitement was created in teas through tho fact being made public thut the Adelaide merchantß weie determined to make the most of their advantage in getting the new season's teas first to band this year, by offering the portion remaining unsold, of the Adelheid's cargo, in this market, on Saturday first. By our telegram from that colony it will be seen that about . ICOO package^ chiefly boxes, were sold to-day, when the cargo was offered there. Tobaucoes are in fair; request. We hear of 300 packages Venus apd Two Seas tens hiving changed bands at full prices. Sales of Barrett's Crown tens at Is, and of Crown fours at 13d, are also reported. In liquids, we hear of Byass's Allsopp's ale, in bottle, having been sold at 10s for quarts and 7s for pints. Hennessy's case brandy meets witb » goml deal of' favor, being very firm at 20a. We hear of 500 cases having changed hands this forenoon at this quo* tation, _^_____ * '

Chbmtchurch.— The Lylidlon Times of Saturday last reports :— In the grain and produce market a somewhat better demand nas been noticed during the week for breads tuffs, bat smallness of stocks prevents transactions of a speculative character. Tne last advices from Australia Lave tended to improve quotations for wheat, and holders in store are not disposed to accept the current offers of 4s "Od. A lew small orders have been received which will almost clear out stocks ; but threshing has recommenced in several districts, so that supplies will soon be replenished. Flour does not improve, stocks being rather heavy.

Barley is wanted badly, and we have heard of sales up tfrps 3d. Oats also meet with an improved inquiry at 2s to 2s 2d ; but the 'farmers are; commencing their spring -deliveries, so that no further advkneo 13 likely to, iensue.' Oatmeal is novy quoted at .tl3 per tonfoi- parcels, wfii(?h is a considerable concession on the price recently ruling. Butter is particularly scarce, and even Is is almost now obtainable. Cheese is equally scarce, at 6id. Potatoes are coming forward mote, freely at L 4 to L 4 108, but these figures are* not likely to be maintained. „-,.■ •. . \- \ In tbe stock and station market, considerable activity has prevailed during the week, but * the transactions have been chiefly con " fined to the yards.. As may be expected at this season of 'the year, the supply of fat stock has gradually been diminishing for several weeks past, and now there is an actual scarcity of both sheep and cattle of piimo quality, more particularly of the latter. At the yards on Wednesday, there was a fair supply of stock yarded, and a large attendance of buyers, which resulted in everything being sold, with some trifling exceptions. Merino wethers made up to 14s 3d, and ewes of the same breed, lOs^Gd. Our quotation for mutton is 3*<d for msrino, and 4d for cross-bred, with a decided upward tendency for anything prime. No lambs have, as yet, been offered publicly, but we nlay soon expect to see them brought for-' ward. For merino ewes in lamb to Leicester rams, there is some demand, but few are offering now, although a few weeks back there were plenty offering in the market. As noted above, fat cattle are now very scarce, and anything moderate is worth 2us per 1001 b, while beef of really prime quality would be worth something more, and no doubt the price will go up for the next month at least
