The County Council was prorogued on Tuesday evening. During the early part of the evening there was a long and hot discussion on the Hungerford contract for the maintenance of the Christchurch road, but we have not space for the report in our present number. In proroguing the Council, the Chairman said that as the time had nearly arrived when he would cease to occupy the chair, he took the opportunity of thanking members for the indulgence shown to him when presiding in the Council, and for the assistance rendered to him in administering the affairs of the County. Although the Council had not very great cause of congratulation, yet he was satisfied with the efforts made to surmount the financial diffi - cultics of the County. He thought the Council compared favorably with the Provincial bodies throughout New Zealand. It was natural that sometimes angry feelings would get the better of members, and he regretted that often his tongue rao. away with his better judgment. He was easilyexcited, and he begged to tender his apology to members on that score, and which he hoped they would accept. The member for the Kanieri, however, had misaed the object he had in view, when taunting him respecting his vote on Mr Hungerford's contract. Again thanking members for their assistance and indulgence, he declared the Council projogued.
