The p s Charles Edward will take her departure, should the sea go down, - this afternoon, for Westport and Nelson. The s s Rangitoto ia now due off Hokitika to-day from Mel bourne_dircct..jShe..will most probably be here on the followirg day, wheji she will be' despatched with passengers for Nelson, all other New Zealand ports, and Melbourne, via the Bluff. ' , { Several schooners, which have been detained in port by the recent' heavy weather, will be towed to sea the first opportunity. The long looked for wish of the Port Chalmers residents to see a home vessel moored alongside the railway pier was attained by the ship Wave Queen, 853 tons, from Bristol, being berthed alongside, by Mr Pi lot LoUdot^ to discharge railway plant, Ac. The vessel •was drawing 17ft aft, and about 16ft for* ward. The Wave Queen was safely berthed at about half-past one o'clock, or close, on high water, amidst .the congratulations of a large number of the inhabitants, who assembled on the pier, in honor of the,occasion, bunting waV displayed on the pier; as well as on the Government ftagstaffsj a'nd'Mr Tayler's. Ori the ship being moored, soundfogs were taken, and resulted as follows :— :g>ep& of water aft, 21ft ; forward, 21ft Gin ; bluff of bow alongside pier, 22ft ; forerigging, £)ft ; nvunrigging, 21ft ; mizenrigging, 19ft Sin. These last soundings Were all alongside : ih» pier. The dredged' gutter under the keel would therefore be still deeper.
