Wellington, Aug. 19.
The ceremony of turning the first sod of the Hutt and Wellington Railway was performed to-day, and with great eclat, by the Governor, with whom Lady Bowen was present. About fifteen hundred people assembled, including the Superintendent, members of the Executive, jfche Mayor, and most of the members of both Houses of Assembly. A great many ladies were present, and all the Volunteers and members of ■: the Fire Brigades turned out for the occasion. Mr Brogden read an address to the Governor, who replied. Mr M'L'ean also addressed a few words to His Excellency on behalf of the Native members. The weather was fine. , " The Colonial Treasurer's Financial Statement will be telegraphed to all the papers to-morrow. Dunedin, Aug. 19. A meeting of the Jewish persuasion has been- held with the object, of establishing a branch of the Anglo-Jewish Association, and a committee was appointed to confer with congregations in other New Zealand cities. A Freight Association is being formed with a view to ldweririg the rates of freight. ,< " ' . ; Mr Henry Howorth is a. candidate for the representation of the Caversham district in the Asstmbly. Vessels can now unload at the Port Chalmers railway pier. Auckland, Aug. 19. The latest Fiji news is that the Legislature have agreed to a loan of L 50,000, to be floated in Sydney by Lieutenant Wood, who has left for that purpose. A Government steamer, with Native forces, under Brigadier-General FitzGerald, has gone to subdue the rebels. Other troubles are threatening. '
