[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW COAL FIELD DISCOVERED. FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH. DUNEDIN, Aug. 16. The celebration of the anniversary of Sir Walter Scott, last night, was a succeaß as far as numbers went, but there was disappointment ' that Mr Anthony Trollope, who had promised to speak, did not appear, having left for Christchurch by the morning's coach. . There is some speculation in Carrick Range mining shares.
A new coalfield, said to be of great •xtent, has been discovered between Catlin's River and Brothers Point. Christchttrch, Aug. 16.
Grain market very dull. Wheat, 4s 8d to 4s 9d ; flour, Ll3 ; oats scarce, 2a 2d ; barley unaltered. Produce very firm; butter, Is ; cheese, 6d ; potatoes offering freely, L 4 to L4 los ; bacon and hams unaltered.
A fire broke out in Uashel street this morning, and two houses were destroyed. - Total estimated damage, L7OO. Insurances —Northern Office, L 26 0; New Zealand Office, Ll4O.
