Mr Duncan, Inspector-General of the penal establishments, was attacked on Sunday by a prisoner named Weechurch, and stabbed in the groin. The wound is not serious. The Town Hall organ is to be opened to-morrow, Saturday, when a concert Will be given by the Mayor. The Permissive Bill was read a second time by a large majority. The Bank of Victoria declared a dividend of 10 per cent., and the Hobson's Bay railway 5. Sugars are very firm, and in active demand ; oats, in demand at 3s 5s ; prime New Zealand wheat quitted at 7s. Sailed. — August 4, Northern Light, for Hokitika. Sydney, Aug. 7. The Newcastle miuers, by ballot, found the majority against the nine hours' movement, and in favor of accepting the offer of the companies. The price of coal is likely to be raised from 9s to 10s. The Assembly rejected the proposed vote for an Australian annex to the London Exhibition. .-■.••.-.• Ten thousand pounds were voted for the new Bilver coinage. The Paper Company's Mill was sold for L 9600. Magnificent returns continue from Tarnbaroora. The Bill amalgamating the legal profession was shelved. • A 12-carat diamond has been found in the Bathnrst district. A fire took place at Rockhampton, by which several houses were destroyed. They were insured for L4OOO in the Pacifia Co., Sydney, and the Liverpool and London. The boiler of the Union saw-milk at Rockhampton exploded, killing two men and wounding ten (some fatally). Adelaide, Aug. 6. MrTodd declines the services of camels. The gap on the overland line is reduced to 50 miles this week. The Government has information of the existence of gold in the Northern territory. ; , The Moonta Co. directors have raised the wages of the miners. The costruction of a branch line to the Roper is under consideration. Tasmania, Aug. 5. The Wilson Government have been requested to resume office and call the Assembly together to rescind the noconfidence motion. .: Traffic is to be resumed on the Launceston and Western Railway.
