At a meeting of the Board of Works, yesterday, a resolution was passed urging upon the Government the. necessity of completing the railway from Timaru to Temuka, thence to the Waihi crossing. The Chairman of the Board had received a communication from the Government, stating that it is at present advised that the engineer to the Government did not intend using the Rangitata Bridge. Duedin, Aug. 9. Isaac Plummer, the notorious Auckland prison-breaker, escaped this afternoon while working with the gang on tbe Caversham road. The police are in pursuit, but have not yet found him. A public meeting which was largely attended, was held at Port Chalmers last night, to consider what measures should be taken to extend the Waitaki and Moeraki Railway to Port Chalmers. A committee was appointed to act with the Mayor and confer with the Government and members of the Assembly. Arrived— Napier, 168 days out, and Otago, 83 days out, both from London; Pakeha, from Wangaroa. Sailed— Swordfish, for flobart Town. Bishop Moran writes to the Star demanding an explanation of the charge by that journal that he had influenced the Wakatip election. Plumraer is not captured. He is supposed to have stolen some cricketers' clothes and disguised himself. Nelson, Aug. 9. People are impatient at the non-com-mencement of the Foxhill Railway. A meeting has been held, and Mr Luckie has been telegraphed to, asking him to urge forward the work. Mr Luckie, in reply, says the Government have no intention to depart from the schedule of the Act, and that the Chief Engineer is to visit Nelson shortly.

The ratepayers will petition the Assembly against the Water Loan Bill. The Captain of the Nebraska was tried to-day. The Crown Prosecutor conducted the case. The Harbormaster stated that the Captain told him positively that he had no sickness on board, and had never furnished any Captain with quarantine regulations. Mitchell, a passenger, deposed that one of the crew connected with the engineroom slept near the mail bags, and an eruption came out all over him with matter-tops. The man took sick nine days before ho arrived.
Mr Bruce, brother of the sick man, de.«
posed that he visited the sick man, and never came ashore. He w: laid up three weeks, went south, and returned in the vessel. Dr Younger said that Bruce suffered from pneumonia, not Bmall-pox. Tho defence called a witness to show that Thompson and Kay went ashore at Wellington before the disease was manifested. The case was dismissed.
