BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall last evening. JPresent— The Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Kennedy, Macgregor, Wbolcock, Coates, Moore, and Dupre. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. Mr R. Wilson wrote asking permission to stack coal off the wharf opposite his present site, and a second letter asking a' lease of half-a-chain of the new wharf on Mawhera Quay for a coal, wharf, which he was prepared to plank over at his own expense, on condition that the cost was deducted from his rent.— Referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was read from Langland's Foundry, Melbourne, stating that ten lamp-posts, according to order, would be shipped by first opportunity, the terms to be three months from "date of: shipment. Letter received.. .-., A letter from Messrs Woolfe and Austin regarding a slaughter-yard for the whole of the butchers in town was read. The Council was of opinion that it would not be advisable to accede to the request. With -reference to a motion passed at the last meeting of the Council regarding the formation of Tainui street to the town boundary, a letter was read from the County Chairman stating that no such deed as that alluded to in the motion was in hia possession. A memorial was read from a number of watermen on the Grey River, requesting that the annual fee should be reduced to LI per annum. At present they had to pay a license of LI per annum for both the boat and the , owner.— lt was agreed to refer the matter to the Finance Committee with power to act. : -. C. H. Boase applied for permission tp lay down moorings in the river and erect a shoot for the loading of cargo in boats. — Refeired to the Public Works Committee, to report to the next meeting. ■ The Clerk of the Bench forwarded 10a fines inflicted for breaches- of the Municipal Corporations Act during last month. A letter was read from the Clerk to the Waste Lands Board stating that certain reserves applied for by the Council in February last, had not yet beenforwarded to Wellington, but would be included in the next schedule of reserves to *be forwarded. It was moved by Mr Kennedy that this Council regrets that the reserves iv question were not among the first gazetted, and request that. they will be gazetted as soon as possible. — Carried. MrJ. C. Moore, as Secretary to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, wrote requesting assistance to meet the present liabilities of the Brigade. It was moved that the letter be referred to the Finance Committee.—Mr Kennedy moved an amendment—" That the financial position of the Council does not warrant them in holding out any hope of further assistance this year, and would suggest to them to take .the preliminary steps for striking a special rate for Fire " Brigade purposes!" This was not seconded. — Mr. Moore explained that he had ascertained that it was impossible at present to strike a special rate for the purpose. The Brigade were, prepared ;to take a bill at a TongMclate, as they had done on a previous occasion. — A discussion took place as to the amount of assistance which had hitherto been given by the Council to the Brigade, and regarding the levying of a Bpecial rate, after which the motion was carried, and the Town Clerk was instructed to take the opinion of the Solicitor regarding the legality of levying the special ratei ! - A letter from Mr D. Magbffin regarding the existence of a nuisance in the corner section of Albert and Mackay streets.— Referred to the Public Works Committee. Mr Kennedy referred to many inafcances in which the watercourses in town were obstructed and made receptacles for all kinds of rubbish, and moved that the Town Clerk take proceedings against any person causing obstructions on streets. The Mayor drew attention to a subject of considerable importance, although no formal communication regarding it had been brought before the Council, namely, the proposed scheme for supplying the town with water. One of the hydrants was exhibited on the flbor of the hall, and examined by the members. It was I agreed that some of the members of the Public Works Committee, -, and the Surveyor should proceed to the proposed site for the reservoir, and report to the next meeting. An application from the Town Clerk for an increase of salary, which had been, deferred for some time, was read, and releired to the Finance Committee, to report to next meeting.
