THE CALEDONIAN MINE.

' Nothing mow exemplifies the permanent value of our gold mines than the turn which recent explorations have given to the fortunes of the famous Caledonian mine. When the rich specimen lode ran out, as it was supposed, the returns fell off, and it was thought by most persona that the mine had been worked out. It appears, ; however, that the break which had occurred in this lode, known as the old Otago run, will no longer interfere with the development of the mine. A drive which has recently been put in has picked up the specimen-bearing lode: again ■ at a distance of 40ft north of the furthest workings of the late manager r and thus " the mine resumes at ouce its' old position before the break of the old Otago run occurred. Shares, which were to be procured on Saturday for Ll6, rose to L 27. with an upward tendency. The Thames Guardian says :— The importance of this find can scarcely be over-rated.'. The Caledonian has entered upon a new era of prosperity, and there is no j reaion' why, should another break in the reef not occur, we may not expect that 'the specimen reef again taken up may be worked, not only in the intermediate level, but be traced down into the lower level also. It is with no little pleasure we notice the return of this once so productive claim to a foremost rank on the Thames gold field, as showing cot only the richness' but the , permanency of bur mines.
