GREYMOUTH BOARD OF HEALTH.
A meeting of the Board of Health was. held in the office of the Collector o£ Customs, yesterday. Those present were-—, the President (Mr Re veil), and Messrs Andrews, Morice, JKing, Masters, and 'Wilmot. After the minutes of the former meeting -had been read and confirmed^ *he Chairmatf stated that he had called the members together in accordance with a resolution of the 12th inst., and also to consider the suggestions of the sub-com-mittee; as contained in the following letter to the Colonial Secretary. He also read a letter from the County Secretary respecting the grant of a site for a lazaret.' After a discussion upon the suggestions of the sub-committee in the letter to Mr Gisborne, it was proposed by Mr Masters, and seconded by Mr King— "That the recommendations of the Committee be , agreed to, and that copies should also be forwarded to the Board of Health at Hokitika and Westport."; The suggestions of the- sub-committee were made on account of the paragraph in the Governor's speech relating to the spread of small-pox in New Zealand. . The following is a copy of the, letter above referred to, as having been addressed to the Colonial Secretary by the Chairman of the Board : - "Sir— The, Greymouth Board of Health haying observed by the speech : of ,-hiSr Excellency the Governor, on the opening of the General Assembly, that measures are to be taken during the present session with the view of improving the law relating to quarantine and vaccination, and for the better enabling means to be taken for the repression of epidemic disease in town and country districts, would beg to ofier the following suggestions in reference to bar harbors : — " That in addition to the 115 t h. clause, of the Harbor and Quarantine, Regulations, 1868, power should 3 be vested in the Board of HeaUh in towns where bar. harbors exist to enable them, when' deemed expedient, to make the necessary, enquiries of all vessels from whatever ports, empowering the Board to put the question contained in schedule 1 of the Regulations, and causing the masters of any such vessels to be required to answer the same. ; (t Also,, that it should be made imperative on all masters of tugs oi* tender steamboats to ask the said questions, when the •Board so. direct, before tendering or towing any steamer or vessel. f ■ j'This Itoard might also be allowed to point out that the requirements of the Vaccination Act, 1871, so far as' this district is concerned, .have not been fully complied with, as may be seen from the returns from the Office of the Registrar ; and the Board would suggest that penal : ties should be introduced in- any new measure, the: power of enforcing which would doubtless act beneficially in having the spirit of the Act more carefully carried out." ■•■■•■ -.■ ■ ■/,:/ ■■■■■■ ■•■■■.:. Tbe County Secretary's letter was as follows : — ' " Sir— l am directed by ■ the County Chairman to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, noted in the margin, requesting that /the reserve for police purposes, on the beach, Blaketown, Greymouth, may be declared a Reserve for a Lazaret, and to inform you that the matter will be brought before the Waste Lands Board. " I am also directed to inform you that, at present, there is no. money available, for the erection of a^suitable building."
