The schooner Spray, Captain Clarkson, with a cargo of produce from Lyttelton, was towed into port on Saturday afternoon. The one other arrival during the same day was the steamer Wallabi, which landed a quantity of stock from Wanganui, and was promptly despatched for that port yesterday morning. The p s Wallace arrived here yesterday from Westpoit en route for Hokitika. After discharging cargo there she will, according to announcement, leave here for Westport and Nelson early on Wednesday morning. The schooner Day Dawn, Jones, master, from Kaiapoi, arrived off the bar yesterday, and was towed in by the Dispatch. According to her log she left Kaiapoi on Friday, 28th June, and made the Grey roadstead on July 4th, but on account of the threatening weather she stood to the northward and took refuge in Wanganui Inlet, where she lay sheltered until t-riday last, on which day she sailed and arrived here as stated. The ketch Jupiter (Russell, master) which was towed in during the same tide as tbe Day Pawn, left Lyttelton on the Bth inst. Experienced a strong S.E. gale on Tuesday, and from that time till Thursday had light variable winds. When off West Wanganui she encountered a Btrong S.W. gale, and was compelled, to run back to the shelter of Cape Farewell, where she was hoveto for eight hours. From that time she had light variable winds till her arrival in the loadstead at 10 pm on Saturday. She brings a large cargo of produce consigned to Mr Woolcock. The Jupiter has. on this occasion, made a rapid and successful voyage .between the East and West Coasts, having only left Grey* mouth for Lyttelton three weeks ago. There was a very heavy storm at Grahams • town, on July 2, and two vessels made a clean breach through the wharf. About a chain of the sea wall near the Kuranui Battery was washed away, -stopping the tram traffic. The new iron clipper barque Hokitika, which arrived lately at Melbourne from Natal, loses bo time in making a teturn trip to the same place. After her cargo of sugar and rum is discharged, it is announced that she will sail for Port Natal with cargo and passengers. Captain Kennedy, formerly of the s s Wellington, has been specially engaged by Mr Brogdeu to command a steamer to bring stores, Sec, from Australia. Captain Kennedy proceeds to Australia on Monday, per Albion, to charter a vessel Mr H. H. Hall has taken advantage of the breakdown of the Californian mail contract, once , more to stir up the Sydney Chamber of Commerce to action to take such steps aa would lead to placing on the lino a service of efficient vessels. The consequence was that the Chamber appointed a deputation to wait on Mr Parkcs, who. admitted that the route had not yet received a fair trial, aa none of the vessels employed had been really suitable. At the same time he hesitated to make the Colony responsible for the entire subsidy, as the experience of the Panama contract showed how difficult it was in such a case to get the other Colonies to come into the agreement. He preferred the plan of securing their support beforehand, and he thought their co-operation might be obtained.
