IMPORTS.
Per Charles Edward, from Hokitika : 1 bale, Giriwood ; 1 case, 1 bale, Lloyd ; 1 parcel, Steel. Tbe only arrival yesterday was the steamer Charles Edward, which returned here from Hokitika. She sails to-day for the aoith. The brigantine Sarah and Mary, which arrived on Sunday last, v announced to sail for Melbourne to-morrow afternoon. The Mohpngo, which lately deprived New Zealand of a month's mail by breaking down when one day out from San Francisco, was mended and sent off again to Honolulu, whence she returned uTsafety to San Francisco. The Chronicle, published in the latter place, in noticing her, return, says that " (he passage occupied nearly thirteen days, and was a disagreeable and uncomfortable one. There is no room in the ship. She leaks badly, the pumps having to be kept in operation all the time to keep her free. She is ■low, steers badly, nnd is in every way a miserable apology for a ship." After using some language of a still more uncomplimentary character, the same journal goes on to say :— " The commanding officer is a man of Eeat skill and judgment. His judgment we ye particular respect for, since he got«ick at Honolulu just before tKe ship was to start, and in consequence did not come on this trip." The Otago Daily Times, at the request of the Government, publishes the reports by Messrs Nancarrow, Brunton, and Douglas, of an inspection of the Nevada's machinery, on th« 3rd instant. They do not anticipate danger from the crack in the shaft; if it ultimately break it will give notice. There is no need for fear if it is examined in every port. The ship should proceed to San Francisco under easy steam. Mr Steward should inspect at Auckland. There are three cracks, not two. Until the vessel reaches a pore where the shaft can be taken out, she should not be restricted from carrying passengers. The shaft cannot be repaired in tbe Colony. If the shaft breaks tho ship must depend ou her sailing qualities.
