On Sunday morning, the departures were the p.s. Wallace for Westport, the p.s. Charles Edward for Hokitika, and the schooner Jo for Melbourne. The only arrival was the Sarah and Mary, from Melbourne. The brigantine Sarah and Mary, which has hitherto traded to the West Coast as one of Messrs Spence Brothers' line, but which is owned by Mr Martin Kennedy, of Greymouth, arrived in port yesterday after a rapid passage from Melbourne. She is commanded by Captain Duncan, who has been in the same command for the last six years, and who reports of his present passage that he sailed from Port Phillip Heads on Sunday, the 30th ultimo. Throughout the passage he experienced strong westerly and south-westerly winds. • Sighted Mount Cook at noon on -Saturday; about ninety miles distant, and yesterday morning the vessel reached the roadstead, when she was at once towed in by the Dispatch. As she was approaching the bar, srje was pooped by a very heavy roller which earned away the starboard noose aft and washed away the two men at the wheel, but fortunately they escaped going overboard, Captain Duncan having a similarly narrow escape. A quantity of water at the same time found its way into the cabin. Sho was caught only by tfais one roller, and was afterwards towed and steered over the bar with ease. and without accident. We are indebted to Captain Duncan for copies of the Melbourne Spera of (he same dates as those brought to c Bluff by the Albion, namely, the 29th ultimo, containing the news received by the Suez mail.

The Kate Conley and the Gleaner were loading at Melbourne for this port when the Sarah and Mary left. The Melbourne Argus, of tho 29th ultimo, says :— •' "The Hokitika, a new iron clipper barque, constructed at home for Messrs Spence Brothers and Co., of this city, arrived at tht» Heads yesterday from London via Port Natal, but hod a dead beat up the bay in consequence of the northerly wind blowing. TSlectric illumination has lately been applied by the Trinity Board to the South Foreland Lighthouse, thus forming a triangle of electric lights with the points already so lighted at Dungeness and Cape Grine.. From the Naval and Military Gazette we learn that the Challenger, 18 tons, screwcorvette, will be commissioned early in the summer for a voyage of exploration and research. Some scientific gentlemen will be accommodated on board the vessel, and it is probable that Captain George S. Nares, now serving in the surveying vessel Shearwater, in the Bed Sea, will be placed in command. The actual places which will be visited have not yet been determined, but it is anticipated that the groups of islands in the Pacific will have special attention bestowed upon them.
