The proceedings for the recovery of . the Doughty estates have been stayed till the costs of the last action have been paid. The claimant received a grand ovation »t Alresford. ; The successful Colonial drawers at the London Art-union are Messrs Milsom, Canterbury, N.Z. ; Newman, Hobart Town ; Jeura, Oamperdown; Manger, York ; Fawcett, Kapunda ; Foiheringharn, Gawler, ; and Miss Grant, Belfast. One-fifth of the capital of the company to be formed for. the construction of six Australian steamers via the Cape is to be > reserved for the Colonies. A subsidy^ from Victoria will be applied for. The passages are to be monthly. „ ;/'-^ Mr Macarthur is to move on the 28th an address to be presented to the Queen, praying her to establish a British protectorate in Fiji. . _.. • Barry Sullivan is drawing crowded houses in the provincial towns. The International Exhibition was pub* licly opened on Ist May. On the same day a grand festival to celebrate the re* recovery of the Prince of Wales was held at tho Crystal. Palace. Several members of the Royal family were present. Anew Te Deum, specially prepared for the occasion by Arthur Sullivan, was performed by a monster band and 2500 voices. There were fireworks in the evening. The. Duke of Edinburgh presided at the annual festival of the Theatrical Fund. The sum of L 640 was subscribed -during the evening. The King of the Belgians ably presided at : the Royal Literary Fund Anniversary, giving several toasts in English. The King's health was given by Disraeli in a felicitous address. The sum of L2OOO was subscribed on the occasion.
The Whitsuntide Volunteer Review has been abandoned because the South-West-ern Railway cannot convey volunteers. Sir Spencer Robinson has memorialised, the Premier for the appointment of an impartial committee of the House of Commons to review the Megiera evidence, and pronounce judgment upon his connection with the affair. . ; : - • A complimentary dinner has been given to Captain Burton, on his starting for the exploration of Iceland, by the Wanderers' Club. >; ..-..' ;• i . An appeal for a divorce from Sir Charles Mordaunt has been laid before the Souse of Lords. The respondent has been ordered to answer within a week. Tlic seamen at Southampton ate on strike, seriously inconveniencing the mail steamers. Club have arrived from America to row against a London crew. Training has been commenced on the Thames, and the nee yn\\ be rowed on June 10. A general v.'se in agricultural wages throughout the count*/ is gradually taking place. A conference in connection with tue new unions, held in London, was attended by local delegates, members of Parliament, and others. The Dundee domestic seivants have held a publio meeting and formed a protection association. The gentlemen's servants have formed a union at Leamington. The Government has sustained a series of small defeats, greatly weakening its position. Its discomfiture on the question of local taxation was followed by an important reverse on the Ballot Bill. The Conservatives again gained a victoiy on the Scotch education question. Mr Fawcett's Dublin University Bill threatened the existence of the Ministry, but the threat of resignation has led to a postponement of the question indefinitely. A bill for the repeal of the Party Processions Act is passing through the Lords. Inundations on the river Po have rendered 40,000 persons homeless. The Duke of Edinburgh has visited Dublin, where he received a hearty welcome. He opened the Exhibition, and unveiled Grattan's statue. Obituary.— Earl of Clancarty, Lord Audley, Sir H. W.
