SOUTH BEACH.

(from our own corrbspondbht.) ■■-■;-; .••..-:.? July Zy ■ The high hopes that have long been entertained of paying gold being found south of the old Whim claims, and those claims known as Dreyklufts land the Perseverance, have not yet been realised, although many months' labor has been Bpent in prospecting the ground. Some time previous to Christmas three partiev amalgamated to deepen the tunnel corn* menced six years since by a party of;' Greeks, who were reported to have 6b* tamed some prospects. This, combined with the fact that Dreykluft and Co. were getting payable gold to the south, gave the men good heart to enter into the un*' • dertaking. The labor they have-per-formed, the hardships they have undergone, the water in the tunnel being* tremendous, are likely to be the only re^f membrance on their minds that will cause them to think of the Lagoon Lead in days to come. Some of the men have already relinquished the idea of getting gold and have left, whilst the majority' yet hope that another week's labor will alter matters for the, better. It is most sincerely to be trusted that such will be the case, for the benefit of the men themselves, irrespective of the loss that it will 5 be to the whole community if it should i not be so. There is yet a possibility that the gold may be higher . up. The tunnel taken up is very deep, and in thi^iea the main chance of gold yet being foTOd. The Perseverance, Dreykleft's, and the others are all in working order and are getting paying gold. „ _. ..... _^X t Englert and Co are now^working on - the old lead having brought up a deep and long tail race from the lagoon for the^ purpose of working it on a face. They"? have also brought in water from the Deep Creek. This has been a very heavy undertaking and has taken considerable time to get into working order. It is very certain that it will prove a very long job, and in, 'he long run a good speculation. Of course work of this kind, requires, a,,./ large and constant supply of water which, •'■*' if the party can secure, will make, their speculation very valuable. It is a matter - of history the quantity of gold that was found on the Old Lead, and it is very « singular that whilst the. Whim Claim, the most southerly one. on the lead, proved, one of the best, yet for a distance of a; r quarter of a mile further south, nothing payable has yet been found. A few days now will determine it, when for better or worse the fate of the Lagoon Lead will be, sealed. - 5 \
