The s s Kennedy arrived from Hokitika yesterday morning and left again on the evening's tide for Westport and Nelson. The smart little ketch Jupiter, from Kaiapoi, arrived yesterday morning, and discharged a cargo of produce in excellent condition. The schooner Canterbury was brought over the bar last nighb by the p s Dispatch. She brings a full cargo of produce, and is consigned to Nancarrow, Henderson, and Co. She left Lyttelton on Friday last,, and has consequently made a good run. A telegram has been received by Mr Metcalf, from Captain Brown, owner and commander of the schooner Lola Montez, reporting the total loss of his vessel ou No 8 Northumberland Orcup, on 10th inst. She parted from her chains, and went on shore. The spars, &c, have been 'saved. The I ola Montez is insured in Mr Metcalf 8 office for r<GSO, L3OO of which is reinsured in the General, and was on her passage from Brisbane to Cleveland Bay.— Sydney Morning Herald, May 18. In BelTs Life the following occurs describing Ashbury's new yacht now building at the Isle of Wight. It cannot be denied that sbo trill have a terribly stiff task set her t« take the Vanguard's "weather wind," but her builder, nevertheless, speaks hopefully of hnr chance. Last year, without doubt, saw the Vanguard's best form, which took six years to arrive at ; so that, although possible, is is hardly probable, on the first blush, that the well-tried crack will go down before a darky. The principal dimensions of the new cutter are— Length from forepart of stem to afterpart of sternpost, 69ft ; breadth, extreme, 14ft 4in ; draught of water forward, 7ft lin ; aft, 10ft Bin ; tonnage, Thames measurement, 59 69 94 tons. She is just now getting smoothed off fair, and beginning to show herself, and what we at the blush imagined to be a heaviness of the quarters has now entirely disappeared. We recognise a very strong resemblance to the Vanguard model, but the lack of power in the bow of the last-named yacht is not visible in the "lona," while the excessive sheer — another 'defect in the Vanguard's construction— is in the present instance al.«o corrected. The tail also shows a greater area of canvas than the Vanguard spreads, yet in extent is nothing more, we. think, than what she will bo well "able to stand up against It is needless to say she will have lead ballast, and a thorough racing outfit, - Mr C Rataey, of Cowes, is making sails, aud J Woods, the master of the Livonia is to have charge of her.
