Melbourne.— The Argiu, of June 8, report* 5— In the import markets a large business has been transacted to-day, a number of sales having come under our notice. In breadstuffs, flour still meets with a fair araouut of attention. We hear of a line of 100 tons having changed hands at LIC. Trade parcels, to a fair extent likewise, wcro disposed of at Ll6 5s to LIG 10s. Wheat is firm at 7s to 7»3d $ middling would sell at 6s Cd to 6s 9d. The Aldinga brings 1500 bags of Adeleide, and we understand that the Derwent also brings a fair quantity of Tosmanian. There are buyers of oats, but the supply is short, Quotations range at from 2a lOd to 3s 3d. Maize is steady at 3s 4d to 3s Gd, but business in the market is checked by the want of arrivals. Considerable excitement in sugar exists. The cargo of the Racer was offered by. auction, but was not sold owing to the extreme rates demanded. Subsequently, in consequence of the leceipt by telegram of later Mauritius advices via Adelaide, reporting a great scarcity of sugar in that island, and that only one vessel, the Albyn's Isle, was loading for Melbourne, while theTassoand Albion were loading for Sydney •—tho market was further stimulated by speculative purchases to the extent of 6700 bags, including 5000 bags, which comprised the Aberdeen's cargo, and 1400 bags 'the balance of the Lorton Vale's shipment, be-' sides 1200 bags Java, all of which will be held for much higher rates than hitherto ruling. Currants still meet with favor ; we hear of an additioial line of 300 barrels having been placed at 31d, in bond. In Dundee goods wo learn <>t tae quittance of 50 bales of woolpacls at ss44<i, to arrive. A shipment of castor oil bos been placed at 3s 9d, in bond. A parcel of 1500 bushels malt has been quitted at 10a 6d. We note a considerable movement in coffee ; the balance of the Restless' cargo and other available parcels have been taken tip to the
extent of nearly 100 tons plantation, and the price has now advanced to 9&d to lOd. Tn tobaccos, some 242 packages, principally Children's goods, were cleared off this forenoon/ Navy tens realised Bid, fours 114 d, pocket pieces 10|d to Is, fives 9|d, navy pieces lljd to la, tens 9^d to 9Jd, besides a few lots in faulty condition.
