Mr Dent, the overseer of the Brunner Coal Mine, has submitted to the Government' a proposal to make a wooden tramway from Brunnertou to Cobden, the total cost to be three thousand five hundred pounds. The Select Committee reports in it 3 favor, and a vote of four thousand is passed. The Grey members are said to be opposed to the proposal which the Government favors strongly. There has been an enormous increase in the price of iron in Britain, amounting to fully 40 per cent. The rise has been very seriously affecting the estimates of the cost of railways. It is said that the scheduled estimates of the Railways Bill cannot possibly be adhered to. Brogden's tendcra are coming in, but a question respecting the accepting of them" has arisen. The nomination for the vacant seat in the Assembly has taken place, when the following candidates were nominated : — Sir David Monro, Messrs Hutchison, Thompson, Cutten, Preston, and Dr Webster. The show of hands was as follows . — Monro, IT ; Webster, 6 ; Hutchison, 4 ; Cutten, 2 ; Preston, 2. The poll takes place on the 12th. The Government have dropped the Education Bill in consequence of the conflicting opinions of the Council re altering existing Ordinance. Auckland, June 4. The General Government declines to allow the Harbor Board to pay- L5OOO to the Provincial Government out of L 25,000 granted when the Kaipara Railway was taken over. The Provincial Government had conveyed harbor endowments in expectation of getting L5OOO refund. The General Government's letter caused some consternation.
