REGULATIONS OF THE PORT.

[to the editor.] Sir— Allow me through the columns of your valuable paper to call the attention of the Borough Council to the difficulties that ateamers have in berthing at the wharf daring the night. Owing to tho dazzling light thrown oy the hotel lamps and the height of the wharf it is impossible to see vessels or boats (particularly the latter) that are fast alongside, until close to them and always too late to avoid accident and expense. To prevent this I think the Council should adopt some such rules as the follow* ing :— In the first place appoint one or two berths for coal boats, 4c, auch as abreast the coal wharves, or from Gilmer's Hotel to Johnston's. In fact, any place as long as masters 'of vessels know where they are. Secondly, make all vessels laying alongside have a light burning below the level of the wharf during tide time. And lastly, the harbor master should he supplied with a colored lamp (say red), that he could hold or hang at the berth the steamnr coming in is to take. This would stood. ' Those rules are adopted in Melson, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Auckland, and we hear but seldom of any accidents to boats from those places. Hoping that something may be done in this matter, T am, &c, B. B. Ckeaoh, Masters. 8. Kennedy. Greyinonth, June 3, 1872.
