Flour firm at LI 3 ; barley wanted, from 4s 9dto 53 ; oats, unaltered ; butter, steady, in request at B£d ; cheese, 4d to 4id ; hams and bacon, 7d to 7^d. Last night the Provincial Council, after five hours' debate, on the motion by J. E. Brown, .for selling land on deferred payments, resolved to try the experiments to the extent of 20,000 acres. Wellington; May 31. Arrived. — The Gothenburg. i The schooner Edward,' timber laden for Lyttelton, from Kaikouras, was towed in by the schooner Aspasia. A large meeting last night asked the Government to resume the employment of the police, pending the appeal to the Council. " ; \ The motion by Mr Q'Conor, and the amendment by Mr Reid, on the subject of the Gold Fields being placed under a uniform government, were both negatived in the Provincial Council, as also a similar motion by Mr Donne. Both Reid and Donne, though proposing motions favoring a change, deprecated the introduction of the question in the Council in any form, as certain: to be offensive, ' and equally certain to be negatived.
