The men, with the exception of four sergeants, refused duty, and police protection is now furnished by the Corporation servants, spare gaol warders, and special constables. The Government are firm. It ia rumored that the Superintendent lias applied for the temporary use of fourteen of the armed constabulary. The Council yesterday voted Ll5OO as a bonus for a paper mill ; L3OO for a bottle factory ; LlOOO for sacks and woolpacks ; and empowered the Government 1 to spend L 12,000 for immigration.
