In the debate on education, Mr Holmes moved an amendment in favor of a purely national system. Port Chalmers* May 15. The Omeo sailed north last evening. On going down the channel she 'touched rocks off Observation Point, and dis* arranged her rudder. She put back, and goes into dock this morning. The Taranaki undocks to-morrow, and carries on the Omeo's mails. Sailed-r-Glencoe, for Hobart Town. The Storm Bird has been taken into the floating dock. Nelson, May 15. MrSaunders has arrived. The nomination for Nelson City is fixed for the 25th inst., and the polling for the 27th. It is rumored that Richmond intends retiring in favor of Saunders ; but it is disbelieved. Saundtrs is expected to attack' both sides. Blenheim, May 15The rivers are higher over the streets than since February, 1868. Bridges are impassable and communication stopped. . The Express cannot publish to-day. No damage has, as yet, been done. Wellington, May 15. The Indcjwidcnt to-day reviews the speeches of the Superintendents on the opening of Provincial Councils, and says that no combination for the purpose of increasing Provincial power is likely to succeed. James Edward Fitzgerald has been appointed inspector of the Wellington Lunatic Asylum. The Phoebe has arrived and sails tomorrow. At Auckland considerable business has been done in second-class stocks, and heavier stocks are neglected. Caledonians are inquired for at L2O. Bismarcks have receded to L 4; All Nations, L 3 10s ; Moanatira, L 4 15s ; Cures, LI 12s ; Central, LI 7s. Taranaki, May 15. The Council passed another resolution requesting the Government to commence the Waitara railway. The Provincial Government has offered a reward of LlOOO for the discovery of a payable gold field in the Province. Gold is said to have been brought in by natives. Auckland, May 15. The Grammar School, in connection with the Central Board of Education, propose to offer five exhibitions of L3O a year each. A trial of stuff, taken from the surface near the margin of the Lake Taupo, was made by the Bank of New Zealand, and proved the existence of gold and silver in small quantities. A Washington telegram has been received, via Sydney,, which states that the House Committee of Congress have agreed to recommend a subsidy of half a million dollars for Webb's line. The Star says that Mr Gillies will be appointed a Judge, and MrHaggitt, of Dunedin, Solicitor-General. The Governor has issued a proclamation removing the fore shore beyond the jurisdiction of the Native Lands Court, pending Legislative action. ■ The crushing returns for the month are 7787 tons and 16,0500z of gold.
