The Waipara was about to leave Hokitika last evening for this port, and en route it was arranged that she should tender the Tararua inwards, special permission being given to that effect by the Customs authorities. > Messrs Spence Bros, and Company's fine Irigantine Sarah and Mary, from Melbourne direct, arrived in the Hokitika roadstead on Monday morning, and was towed into the river on Tuesday morning's tide by the ps Lioness. Captain P. Duncan reports leaving Port Phillip Heads on April 26th with strong N.E. winds, which lasted up to the Ist inst. Passed through Banks's Straits on the 2nd, and took our departure from Cape Barwon on the same day, the 3ape bearing N. W. 15 miles distant. From thence fresh southerly winds were experienced all the way across. Sighted Mount Cook on Sunday last, sth ; instant at noon, being 4& days only from the Straits, and one of the quickest passages recorded. From thence light easterly winds were experienced up to the roadstead, arriving there on Monday, and into the river as above. The Sarah and Mary brings a large general cargo of merchandise, also a deck load of potatoes, and a new funnel for the steamer Lioness.— W. C. Times.
By tbe courtesy of Messrs Spence Bros, and Co, of Melbourne, the West Coast Times was, on Tuesday night, put in possession of the following telegram from Port Adelaide to that firm, dated May 2 : -"Found, Magnet's boat at sea, badly smashed. . Instruct me. H. Wigmore (ship) Mary Cumming."
