The half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand showed a net profit, to the 31st March, after providing for all bad or doubtful debts, of L 44,995, and a balance from last year of L 7604. A dividend was declared of ~ 15 per cent, per annum, leaving -L7OOO undivided. The Governor, accompanied, by -Mr MTLean, arrived at the Thames yesterday, having crossed overland from Katikati to Ohinemuri. An inquiry has commenced intocharge3 of cruelty against the keeper and matron of the lunatic asylum at Karori. The evidence of a female attendant shows that patients were systematically beaten aud ill treated. Two female patients said they hdd nothing to complain of, but one admitted being beaten. The Provincial Government has engaged Mr M'Leod, M.H.R., to go to Canada to procure 500 immigrants, He does not leave till after next session, of the Assembly.
