THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. WEDNESDAY, APRIL .24, 1872.

The proceedings in connection with the election of a member to fill the seat in theNeJsin Provincial Council, vacated by Mr Wilkie, one of the members fcr the Grey Valley, commenced yesterday at Cobden.- Ife was expected that a number of candidates would be nominated, but for many reason only two "came to the front. Mr Frank Guinness and Mr E. A. Drury were duly proposed and, seconded, and, on a show of hands taken, it was declared in favor of Mr Guinness. A poll was demanded on behalf, of Mr 'Drury, which will be taken on Saturday. There were only abput a crozen persons present, and, excepting the proposers and seconders of the' candidates, ,few even of these took any interest in the proceedings. Whatever the residents of Grey- , mouth or. Cobden may think of these elections of members for the Provincial Council of Nelson for the "home circuits "^—the" people in the country districts, we are led to. believe, look npon them as all-important, For the last week or two, the procuring of a suitable candidate tp t succeed Mr Wilkie has been thoughtfully discussed by the electors in the up-country districts, and the .choice of the constituency appeared to lie betweeu Mr John Williams Jones and Mr Frank Guinness. As will be: Seen in another column, Mr Jones* received a requisition ' signed by most of the voters who take an immediate interest in election matters. Mr Jones, for reasons which he gives, declined to seek election ; ; but by allowing his name to head the requisition to Mr Guiauees> he acknowledges the right of the constituency to hold different views from himself a* to the desirability, or othenvise, of ''electing a member to represent the Grey Valley district in the-Nelson Provincial Council. The contest, therefore, lies . between Messrs Guinness and Drury, and there can be, no ; doubt as to the ultimate issue. MrGuinne3s came to the nomination at the request of a large body of the electors, and it is tb be f presumed that he "will be supported by Jhose who signed fche^ requisition, and that every effort will be made' tysecure his return. Mr J. M. Langdon was brought- forward, but at the last moment he, thought fit to retire in favor of Mr Guinness, and he seconded: that gentleman's nomination. Mr Langdon, if elected, would have made a opedftable representative of the Grey Valley 'dfctrioi' in ihe Nelson Provincial Council.* He-is an old resident, and his enterprises will- 1 show that his interests have always; been identical with those of the residents of the Grey Valley. Jfo Drury is a young politician, and his political ideas, if he has any, are yet undergoing the process of incubation. If, as he unfortunately remarked in his address .to the few electors yesterday congregated in the Court House at Cobden, he "is always to be found among the taujpgs," it is just as well that he should remain there at present, or, at all events, . until he arrived by virtue of that . irrer.ressibility for whjuh he is notorious, at the "head, of the boxes" or thereabouts. In the forthcoming session of $he Provincial Council we have reason to toueye thftt considerable concessions will be. jQ|d *
