The steamship Alhambra, from Melbourne, arrived off Hokitika yesterday innrning, anil was tendered in the afternoon by the steamer Waipara. She was to come on to this port dariug tue night, and to be tendered by the Dispatch at an early hour this morning. The steamer Murray sailed for Westport shortly before six last eveniog, and had, apparently, some difficulty in getting over the bar. Since the late frc3h tiie channel is a

In our telegrams of Melbourne news received by the Alhambra there is no mention made of the Magnet haviug put into any port, and the presumption that she has been disabled at sea during the prevalence of the equinoctial gales is somewhat strengthened by tne absence of intelligence from any of the Australian shippiug ports. Considerabla interest is naturally taken in the arrival of this vessel, or in new 3of her safety, it being understood that there were several passengf r i on board bound for this place, including Mrs Boylan and her family. There does not, however, appear to be any cause for alarm. The suggestions of Captain Le Brun, of the Gleaner, are similar to those made here — that the Magnet, while uuder full sail, may have been caught aback by one of the equinoctial squalls prevailing, anrl may have ~ wnfeb suevnasroeen* "inrauie-fcor— itrarar-ayui.-ef or has reached a port to which there is no telegraphic communication . It is said that she had no spare spars on deck during this voyage, and there is a statement, with which one who was formerly a sailor on board is accredited, tbat one of her masts was supposed to be scarcely sound enough to stand any extreme or sudden pressure in a squall or heavy gale. These, however, are mere statements, foi which there may be no good authority.
